Elder Austin Young sent us news of a long awaited
baptism of Antonio.  He was excited to see this friend enter the waters of baptism this September 2011.  This was his last week in "El Campo" and he was grateful to stay a bit longer.  He let us know that he was called to be the new "AP" Assistant to the President.

Santiago West Missionary said Farewell to Earthly Mission
Elder Benjamin Taylor Jennings Will Be Missed Benjamin Taylor Jennings, missionary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, age 19, died Saturday, May 21, 2011 while serving in the Santiago Chile West Mission. The cause of death is not yet known; he collapsed on his morning jog with his companion and could not be revived. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 25, 7:00 p.m. at the Latter-day Saint meetinghouse, 20 Boscobel Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22405. A memorial service is planned for Friday, May 27, 11:00 a.m. at 1915 North Canyon Road, Provo UT, 84604. He will be buried in East Lawn Memorial Hills Cemetery, Provo, UT. In 2006 they moved to Fredericksburg, VA, south of Washington DC. Ben was a 2009 graduate with honors of Stafford Senior High School. He was an accomplished artist, cartooning and illustrating for his high school newspaper and for the youth section of the Free Lance-Star newspaper. Ben attended Brigham Young University in Provo, UT fall and winter semesters, 2009-10. Ben departed on his mission in September, teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ and providing service to the Chilean people. Ben loved serving the Lord, the people in Chile, and the other missionaries. He loved Mission President Richard and Melinda King. There are no words to describe our sorrow at his loss, but we find comfort in the knowledge that we will be with him again in the next life. He was a great missionary, son, brother, and friend. It was a privilege and delight to know him. He touched many lives for good in the short time he spent with us, and he will be deeply missed. Ben is survived by his parents and siblings Leah (18), Westley (15), and Wendy (13), and by grandparents Harold and Ima Jean Oaks of Orem (Virginia Oaks, deceased), and Julia Jennings of Bountiful.

How Great Shall Be Your Joy
Elder gave us the news that he had the special privilege of baptizing a young boy named Jesus.  He shared the pictures today in his e-mail.
"We had a crazy week! The two highlights are that we did 140 contacts in the week (I've never done more than 60) and that Jesus and Daniel got baptized and confirmed!!!!!!!!! The baptism was awesome. Look at the pictures for a surprise. Jesus wanted me to baptize him. I was pretty nervous. I got out my sparkling white pants and tie out of my suitcase for the first time. I went slowly through the baptismal prayer. I was so nervous that I had forgotten his second name and asked him again in the water: Jesus Fransisco Ortiz Ortiz. The family is so awesome. Mauricio is progressing more and more. This past week we sat down with him and taught him personally the word of wisdom. We invited him to make a plan to stop drinking. They've been coming to church now for almost 2 months."

Don't Let the Bed Bugs Bite
Elder Young has been dealing with fleas...dreaded fleas. At first, he "dealt" with them.  Then they got so bad he had to get treated. The blessing is.... that through these health challenges, he turned to His Savior.
"I was pondering about two days ago, and my body was hurting a little, and it came to me a very important observance and truth about the Atonement. It has to do with Christ`s agency when he atoned for us. When Christ suffered for our sins in Gethsemane, He was not forced by the Father to suffer; rather, He chose to take upon himself the pain - the action was proactive. In much clearer writing, we know that, "He drank the bitter cup." He made the coherent decision to pick up the cup, bring it to his mouth, and drink and swallow each bitter drop. It is much easier to be forced to suffer, just for the fact that the decision is already made. On the other hand, the decision to suffer is almost as agonizing as the actual inflicted pain. Furthermore, I believe that Christ, in His infinite mind, could make and did make the conscious and separate decision to atone for each and every one of us - one at a time. It was not a blanket decision, nor a blanket suffering. It was individual. Jesus Christ, because of His eternal love, used his agency to choose to suffer eternal penalties for the finite number of our Father`s spirit children. He did not forget any one; nor did he deny himself a sacrifice for any one. He knows my suffering; he chose to suffer it. He knows your suffering. He chose to suffer it. And as such, for each drop and each spirit child, Christ chose to suffer, and to drink the bitter cup. It is impossible to me to comprehend how He could go on and on and choose suffer, each time making the correct decision. I am so grateful that, line by line, God is allowing me to view the Greatness and Eternal Consequence of the of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. "
We are glad that Elder Young is on the mend!!!

On Fire!
Near the beginning of Elder Young's mission,  he was wakened by his bed sheets on fire! Thanks to his companion and quick thinking (stop, drop, and roll) his burns were minimal.  This recent event, is different. Elder Young is on fire...a spiritual fire.  His e-mail today to the president (shared with his family) was amazing!!! Here is part of it:
This morning as a zone we had one of the most powerful mission/life experiences I've ever had. We woke up at 5AM. There was a lot of opposition to doing this activity, such as Elder Smart getting sick and Elder Silva going to the doctor, but in the end we all made it. The climb was simple and short - a lot shorter than I thought it's be. In about 40 minutes we reached the summit and looked over Melipilla. The view was beautiful of course, but the best part was that as the sun rose we lead a zone devotional. We opened by singing strongly, "High on a Mountain Top". We then read Ether 12: 5-6:
5 And it came to pass that Ether did prophesy great and marvelous things unto the people, which they did not believe, because they saw them not.

5 And it came to pass that Ether did prophesy great and marvelous things unto the people, which they did not believe, because they saw them not.
6And now, I, Moroni, would speak somewhat concerning these things; I would show unto the world that faith is things which are hoped for and not seen; wherefore, dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith.
We then applied these versus and their meanings to the Chilean Prophecy by Elder Holland and others.   Elder Holland, like Enoch, has prophesied great and marvelous things unto the people, which many do not believe, because they see them not.  He stated, "I prophesy with all of my apostolic authority that Chile will be a beacon of the Church in South America.  It will be a beacon to the whole church around the world IF we will be faithful, IF it will be your prophecy as well as mine - IF, that will be your view as well as mine."
The great purpose of this hilltop devotional was that each missionary might make this prophesy their prophesy, just as Elder Holland Invited.  I expressed this purpose, and then I testified and prophesied, along with Elder Holland, as to the sure truth of Chile's great future.  Each missionary followed, and each missonary, according to the Fire and Spirit of Prophesy that was with us, testified and prophesied as well.  Elder Silva shared that he had asked God and received an unforgettable answer earlier in the mission about the truthfulness of the prophesy.  He said that the church in Chile would grow immensely.  Elder Crist testified that Melipilla itself would be a beacon to the church.  Elder Quispe touched my heart when he said, "I know you might not believe me, but as I reached the top of the hill, I saw an angel, bright and glorious, and I realized that God had sent his protecting angels as we climbed the hill, and of course he sends them to protect us throughout every day".  Elder Keogh blossomed when he fearlessly pronounced the truths of faith and obedience.  He testified, "We need to have faith, and you can't have faith without obedience."  The ending testifier was a more powerful testimony and prophesy, and it came from a missionary that I didn't expect: Elder Lewis.  He said, "Yesterday between conferences, I was feeling something really special, like a feeling like something big was going to happen, beginning here in Melipilla, starting with us.  It has to start with us."  And so that was that.  Every single missionary had made the prophesy theirs, and the Spirit had written it in their hearts.
Just as we climbed and did not doubt once that the sun would rise, we must have faith, and work without doubt, knowing that God will fulfill his word, and establish his kingdom in Chile.  We ended by singing, Oid el Toque del Clarìn, and our voices carried and climbed.  I felt a very rare, full joy; and that our voices were mixed with those of angels.

Yes, It is Official
Dear Brother and Sister Young ,
I am pleased to inform you that your son, Elder Young , has been called to serve as a Zone Leader  in our mission.  He has exhibited leadership capabilities through his desire to learn and lead out in his efforts as a missionary.  His example of hard work, following the Spirit, and concern for his fellow missionaries have prepared him to assume these new responsibilities.
This opportunity will stretch him and give him new opportunities for growth.  As he lifts and sustains the missionaries under his stewardship, he will develop a deep love for them and for the Lord.   These abilities will sustain him throughout his life.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve with your son here in the mission field. This is the work of the Lord.  His efforts are blessing the lives of so many.  I am grateful to you for supporting him in this new and important calling.
Sincerely,
President Richard W. King

NEW calling - Zone Leader
We are quite sure, though we may be wrong....but, if we are right and reading the clues right...Elder Austin Kyle Young is a new Zone Leader!  Elder Young told us in a "round about way" that he was made Zone Leader last Monday. LOL ...More evidence to come!
One Year Celebration
Tomorrow marks ONE YEAR for Austin being out on his mission! He entered the Provo, Utah Missionary Training Center on March 24th, 2010.  In honor of his one year milestone, I have decided to create a blog for him and for all of those who love him.  I will try to post details, pictures, experiences, and pieces of letters on a regular basis. We are so proud of you Elder Young!
